Commercially bred feeder insects are generally safe, but understanding potential hazards helps you make informed decisions and protect your reptile’s health. The three main categories of risk are parasites, pesticide contamination, and bacterial infection.

Commercial vs WildCommercially bred feeders from reputable suppliers carry minimal parasite risk. Wild-caught insects can harbour nematodes, protozoa, and trematodes (flukes) that infect reptiles.
The biggest parasite risk comes from wild-caught insects and earthworms from unknown sources. Commercially bred feeders are raised in controlled environments with no exposure to wild parasites. Always buy from reputable suppliers.
Pesticide Contamination

Critical WarningPesticides are the single greatest risk from wild-caught insects. Even trace amounts of organophosphates, neonicotinoids, or glyphosate can be lethal to reptiles. Never feed insects from gardens, farms, or roadside areas.
Bacterial Risks

Dead Feeder Insects
Remove dead feeders from your reptile’s enclosure within hours. Decomposing insects breed Salmonella, Pseudomonas, and other harmful bacteria that can cause serious infection.

Colony Hygiene
Clean feeder colonies regularly. Remove frass, dead insects, and mouldy food. Poor colony hygiene is the most common cause of bacterial contamination in commercially kept feeders.

Gut-Load Freshness
Remove uneaten fresh food from feeder containers within 24 hours. Rotting vegetables breed harmful bacteria that transfer to your reptile when the insects are eaten.

Hand Hygiene
Always wash hands after handling feeder insects and before handling your reptile. This prevents cross-contamination and protects both you and your animal.
Mite Prevention

Colony KillerGrain mites are the most common pest in feeder insect colonies. They arrive on contaminated substrate, spread rapidly, and can crash an entire colony. Freeze new substrate for 48 hours before use to kill mite eggs.
